Today we salute South Australia’s first woman Olympian, Denise Norton (Wangel). Denise represented Australia at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics at the age of 18, swimming the 100- and 400-metre freestyle. “My grandmother worked very hard at her training and had great achievements in a time when women were not particularly recognised for athletic or other achievements…” said granddaughter Rebecca Griggs (Murtagh 2019, https://dev.adelaideliving.blis.site/city-park-honours-olympian). Earlier this year, the City of Adelaide paid her tribute by naming the Adelaide Aquatic Centre’s park lands after her. Now known as Denise Norton Park/Pardipardinyilla (Park 2), it’s a fitting honour for an athlete who blazed a trail for Australian sportswomen.
