On this day in 2013, the Australian Capital Territory passed into law Australia’s first Marriage Equality Act. On 12 December that same year, the High Court struck down the law, finding it inconsistent with the federal Marriage Act. #MarriageEquality was finally legislated for all Australians by a vote of federal parliament on 7 December 2017 after a national postal survey gave voice to the nation’s desire for equality under law.
